of people who you can look to as sort of bellweathers for how much we're going to get legislatively, harry reid was also on the sunday shows this weekend doing what i will call a delicate political kabuki theater dance around the question of the assault weapons ban. let's hear what he had to say. >> frankly, she knows i haven't read her amendment. i didn't vote for the assault weapons last time because it was -- didn't make sense, but i'll take a look at it. >> how about restriction on high capacity magazines for ammunition? >> i think that's something we definitely have to take a look at. >> take a look or vote for? >> well, let's see what it is. >> i guess that's not shutting the door, right? we'll take a look at it is the opening the door to this ok the floor of the senate, so maybe that is a good sign for people advocating for gun safety laws? >> i think it is a good sign, and lots of democrats want to be in the place where reid is. saying essentially, oh, i'm not really for the assault wepdz ban, but i do support these other measures. that's looked like -- if you think about somebody

no, harry reid is not a more powerful guy. but i do agree in the end, if the president will stop demagoguing, and if he'll stop running a presidential campaign, a permanent campaign that david brooks is talking about, al, i think you're right. i think the president, at the end, may actually make some decisions that will upset his own base, change cpi, on hopefully -- hopefully he won't take paul krugman's position and say we'll worry about medicare in 2025 when it starts to melt down. hopefully he'll be a little more responsible than that. i think he will. >> yes. >> but the problem, i think, goes back to mika's point. in all of the attacking the president, he has a plan on the table. you can say is demagoguing. the revenues that he's putting on the table from the taxes add up. the republicans have just come back saying, we're not putting revenue on the table, but they have not come up with a counterproposal. they haven't even shown up. the problem with the david brooks problem is the sequence of events. we set up sequestratio

guest: we note that harry reid and john boehner speak on a river basis. they try to speak once a week. there were conversations before recess about the possibility of all this. we don't know but perhaps there were discussions on the sidelines of the rosa parks statue unveiling yesterday. the house majority leader have been firm. the senate we'll -- we'll deal with it great otherwise, it does not look like there will be significant progress. we have to wait and see. the way it works, sometimes these conversations are ongoing. somebody is coming to the floor or a bill can be brought up and things can get moving again. we are in a wait and see mode. otherwise, we are waiting to see things go at the white house and whether lawmakers will jump in on friday or wait until next week. host: thank you for your time. ed o'keefe for the washington post. the "washington times" here is president obama and speaker boehner. never let it be said that president obama has failed to spend time with the begin leaders in seeking an alternative to budget cuts that will hit most
